Osstirol is not exposed to mass tourism, yet has great potential in the field of mountaineering to offer.
Osttirol is described as a hiker’s paradise, a paradise for mountain bikers, and a paradise for mountain climbing and touring in the mountains.
The region has the oldest pastures, where since time immemorial, the South Tyrolean farmers let their cattle in the summer graze.
Water Sports
Various water sports is offered at various locations in Osttirol.
Although there are no large lakes in the region, the possibilities are very large.
There are some very nice fishing options, beautiful wild rivers for rafting and numerous indoor and outdoor pools which have a lot to offer.

Böckin Mühle
Through the efforts of the Tourist office the Böckin Mühle (watermill) in Hopfgarten in Defereggen was restored. In the summer time special performances are held each week.
Maria Hilfer Wasserfall
40 meter high waterfall at the beginning of the Staller Klamm.
Blumenweg “Oberseite”
The walk along the pathway Flowers Oberseite St. Jakob provides insight into the many colors of the alpine plants.
Holzer Mühle
Through the efforts of the Tourist office the Holzer Mühle (watermill) in Hopfgarten in Defereggen was restored. In the summer time special performances are held each week.
Nationalparkhaus Matrei
One of the most attractive exhibition spaces in Osttirol. The exhibition is divided over two floors and natural and cultural particularities of Osttirol and its valleys. An absolute must if you want to sniff a piece of culture.
Osttiroler Krampustage
The Krampuswalking early December is a very old tradition.
Christkindlmarkt in Lienz
The Hauptplatz in Lienz is decorated with festive Christmas lights. The Christmasmarkt begins in late November, and here you can find what makes the Christmas season in Austria so pleasant and special.
Obere Altstadt Lienz
The Mediterranean atmosphere invites you to stroll, and promises a unprecedented and unparalleled shopping experience in the Rosengasse and th Johannesplatz. An extensive and varying range of medium markets, bakeries and cake shops, cafes, restaurants, clothing shops, bookstores, jewelry, sports shops, gift shops and so on.
Wegelate Säge Innervillgraten
The only remaining Venzianer Sawmill (over 100 years old). Here you can see how in the past (and present) the trees of the mountains were turned into wood for example housing.
Wurzerhof Außervillgraten
The Heimatpflegeverein in Villgraten deals with the preservation of culture and art historical objects. And good example is the Wurzerhof datin from the 14th century with its Wurzer Chapel, the Wurzer Mill, The Waschkuchl (washrooms) and Hausmuseum Wurzerhof.
Pilgrimage Church of Maria-Schnee
The pilgrimage church of Maria-Schnee in Kalstein at 4 km from Innervillgraten, was inaugurated in 1875. The church is one of the most attractive churches in the area.
Events
In the region of East Tyrol, and also of course in the various towns and villages are naturally regular events, according to local traditions.
A good example are the Krampusch events, where East Tyrol also is a bit known for, though this is also a cultural event in other parts of Tirol, incidentally, for young and old.
The Christmas markets, such as those in Lienz, are typical of the region, and very cozy.
During the holiday seasons, special events are organized for tourists, which are also very nice and cozy.
